The Washington Metro, commonly called Metro, is the rapid transit system serving the Washington metropolitan area in the United States. It is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) and consists of six lines (Red, Orange, Silver, Blue, Yellow, and Green) with 91 stations. The system began operation in 1976. As of 2023, the network spans approximately 117 miles (188 kilometers) and serves about 600,000 passengers daily, making it the third-busiest rapid transit system in the United States.
