Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is the rapid transit system serving the San Francisco Bay Area in California. It connects San Francisco with cities in the East Bay and suburbs in northern San Mateo County. The system began operation in 1972. As of 2023, the BART network spans approximately 131 miles (211 kilometers) with 50 stations and serves about 400,000 passengers daily, making it the fifth-busiest heavy rail rapid transit system in the United States.
