The New York City Subway is the largest rapid transit system in the United States and one of the oldest and largest in the world. Operated by the New York City Transit Authority, a subsidiary of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), it consists of 36 lines, 472 stations, and 245 miles (394 kilometers) of routes. The system began operation in 1904 with the opening of the first underground line. As of 2023, it serves about 5.5 million passengers daily, making it the busiest rapid transit system in the Western Hemisphere and the seventh-busiest in the world.
